Austrian prisoners can serve time at home in the electronic shackles

Since the summer of this year sentenced to no more than 12
months’ imprisonment, and defendants will be able to serve time at
home, but with “electronic shackles, said on Saturday the Austrian

inmates or defendants requires the fulfillment of certain
conditions, in particular, the presence of permanent residence and
a fixed work at least 30 hours per week.

Operation of each such electronic anklet will cost 50 euros for
each day – this is twice cheaper than prison. Currently, candidates
for such an “electronic arrest” are not seen more than 500
people.

Even in 2006, the land of Upper Austria was an experiment on the
use of an electronic anklet to monitor the behavior of parolees.
The practice was justified by proving the reliability of
“electronic control”.
